Dolan and Hamill Duplex

Bricklayer John P. Dolan and carpenter Jack Hamill built this handsome Classical Revival style masonry duplex in 1896. Details like the wide wood stringcourse above the foundation, rusticated stone windowsills, arched windows, and dentilated (tooth-like) cornice reflect Dolan and Hamill’s fine craftsmanship. Between 1890 and 1905, Dolan and Hamill built many of Anaconda’s most important civic buildings, including the Montana Union Depot, Anaconda High School, St. Paul’s Church Rectory, and the Anaconda-Deer Lodge County Courthouse and Jail. At times, the duplex was bustling with residents. By 1902, Jack Hamill and his sister Annie shared the north unit with three boarders. John Dolan, his wife Mary, and their four children shared the south unit with six boarders. The Dolans moved to Utah in 1905 and leased the south unit to John’s brother Charles, wife Kate, and two children. After Jack died in 1921, the duplex hosted an array of smelter and railroad workers and their families. Anaconda’s population declined after 1960, and the owner converted the duplex into a single-family home.
