Stucco scored to look like stone originally covered the rubble stone walls, and Gothic transoms lent a civilized dignity. While Virginia City was Montana’s Territorial Capital (1865-1875), the second floor held the entire territorial government offices. The first floor housed retail stores, including grocers Rockfellow and Dennee (1864) and clothing stores of the Seigel brothers (1866), Henry Elling (1872), Armstrong and Johnson (1873), and Robert Vickers (1883). In 1943, Vickers' grandson Bob Gohn, who lost his sight in a mine accident at age twenty, opened his famous bar, grocery, and hardware store here, which he ran with remarkable ability until his death in 1986.","sponsor":null,"accessinfo":"Private","lede":"","website":"","related_resources":["Read about Virginia City National Historic Landmark District","See photos of Virginia City National Historic Landmark District"],"factoids":[],"files":{"https://historicmt.org/files/fullsize/7fb3b1baa7b23ddc2665741d7a5e23ac.jpg":{"id":2443,"mime-type":"image/jpeg","title":"Content's Corner, Virginia City","description":"View of a large stone building with seven men standing along the rail on the upper floor and seven men on the street at the corner.
