He married Louise Huffman in 1895 and later became a family doctor to generations of Hamiltonians. An enthusiastic supporter of Hamilton’s welfare, Dr. McGrath helped establish Hamilton’s first hospital and later the Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital in 1931. He owned the Bitter Root Drug Store for decades, served as a Ravalli County Bank director for thirty years, and spearheaded efforts to revive the defunct Ravalli County Fair in 1937. In 1910, the McGraths hired contractors to build this distinctive residence and carriage barn. The home’s side-gable roof and full front porch reflect the Craftsman style, while the emerging Colonial Revival style is embodied in the flared eaves, matching dormers, and multi-paned upper window sashes. The carriage barn, which initially held the doctor’s 1909 Maxwell Runabout (an early automobile), also illustrates the Colonial Revival style influence. Dr. McGrath died in 1939, and Louise remained in residence until her death in 1946.","sponsor":null,"accessinfo":"private","lede":"","website":"","related_resources":["<a href=\"https://npgallery.nps.gov/NRHP/GetAsset/c6eaa3c4-7bfc-4a2c-aa8f-33f7a9396e5a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Read more about the Hamilton South Side Residential Historic District</a>","<a href=\"https://npgallery.nps.gov/NRHP/GetAsset/c2415d71-dcb1-4e5a-999d-f966f5b61677/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">See photos of the Hamilton South Side Residential Historic District</a>"],"factoids":[],"files":{"https://historicmt.org/files/fullsize/3487ff00d19bc3275efca04a1f6e3a1f.jpg":{"id":6430,"mime-type":"image/jpeg","title":"McGrath Residence","description":"View of facade | Google Streetview image | ca. 2024","alt":"Photograph of colonial craftsman house facade with trees and foliage ","thumbnail":"https://historicmt.org/files/square_thumbnails/3487ff00d19bc3275efca04a1f6e3a1f.jpg"},"https://historicmt.org/files/fullsize/16efd9e360a64fae7216fde7716e4e7c.jpg":{"id":6432,"mime-type":"image/jpeg","title":"McGrath Residence","description":"View of facade and side of house | Montana State Historic Preservation Office | 1987","alt":"Black and white photograph of hosue facade and side ","thumbnail":"https://historicmt.org/files/square_thumbnails/16efd9e360a64fae7216fde7716e4e7c.jpg"},"https://historicmt.org/files/fullsize/88f4c1c0123cbc7c8d640e6247bdb0fc.jpg":{"id":6431,"mime-type":"image/jpeg","title":"McGrath Residence","description":"View of carriage house | Montana State Historic Preservation Office | 1987","alt":"Black and white photograph of carriage house behind main residence ","thumbnail":"https://historicmt.org/files/square_thumbnails/88f4c1c0123cbc7c8d640e6247bdb0fc.jpg"},"https://historicmt.org/files/original/7ca3903cc86854b3b211fdb8b2495da3.pdf":{"id":6539,"mime-type":"application/pdf","title":"Hamilton Southside Residential Historic District","description":"Nomination Documentation.
