Bernard and Minnie Noon likely built the home circa 1901. They shared it with Minnie’s parents, Patrick and Maria Whitty, and raised three children here. Bernard, a prominent lawyer and Democratic politician, started his career working for his uncle Patrick Largey, owner of the Speculator Mine. He also served in the state legislature and as a district court judge before organizing the East Butte, Tuolumne, and Pilot Butte mining companies. In 1918, his father-in-law Patrick was elected sheriff. The Noons sold the house to widower Cornelius P. Callahan in 1922. Cornelius sold life insurance and raised five of his six children here. In 1926, his fifteen-year-old daughter Marion became the first female to swim across Georgetown Lake near Anaconda, a distance of more than two miles. His sons Joseph W. and Cornelius Jr. served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Joseph received the Navy Cross for commanding the USS Ralph Talbot during action against Japanese forces on Rendova Island in the South Pacific in 1943.","sponsor":null,"accessinfo":"private","lede":"","website":"","related_resources":["<a href=\"https://npgallery.nps.gov/GetAsset/b2694698-4c33-4e3d-b1f9-d8b8740bf6dc/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Read more about the Butte Historic District</a>"],"factoids":[],"files":{"https://historicmt.org/files/fullsize/30554a5c85f8255b6eefec45bb9b36e6.jpg":{"id":6297,"mime-type":"image/png","title":"925 West Quartz","description":"North view of facade | Google Street View | June 2012","thumbnail":"https://historicmt.org/files/square_thumbnails/30554a5c85f8255b6eefec45bb9b36e6.jpg"},"https://historicmt.org/files/fullsize/c1dd79ae78dacbed92c03e0d3ebcafce.jpg":{"id":6295,"mime-type":"image/jpeg","title":"925 West Quartz","description":"North view of facade | Butte Silver Bow Archives  | ca. 1960s | City of Butte Tax Records","thumbnail":"https://historicmt.org/files/square_thumbnails/c1dd79ae78dacbed92c03e0d3ebcafce.jpg"},"https://historicmt.org/files/original/29e93dcfdc72c451c0ffbfbe0f116fa9.pdf":{"id":6371,"mime-type":"application/pdf","title":"Bernard Noon obituary","description":"","thumbnail":"https://historicmt.org/files/square_thumbnails/29e93dcfdc72c451c0ffbfbe0f116fa9.jpg"},"https://historicmt.org/files/fullsize/e8cf6c9383ff3e50c3e8479e4a04d77e.jpg":{"id":6296,"mime-type":"image/jpeg","title":"Bernard Noon Portrait","description":"Newspaper clipping | September 30, 1902 | The Butte Miner","thumbnail":"https://historicmt.org/files/square_thumbnails/e8cf6c9383ff3e50c3e8479e4a04d77e.jpg"},"https://historicmt.org/files/original/9c0e3e806269c4e1cc58df6a6500c702.pdf":{"id":6369,"mime-type":"application/pdf","title":"Record Swim Made By Butte Girl At Georgetown Lake","description":"Newspaper clipping | The Helena Independent Record, Helena, MT","thumbnail":"https://historicmt.org/files/square_thumbnails/9c0e3e806269c4e1cc58df6a6500c702.jpg"},"https://historicmt.org/files/original/7ce66b8dcdaac7dfb20f8e0b5c977d8e.pdf":{"id":6370,"mime-type":"application/pdf","title":"Joe Callahan gets Navy cross The_Montana_Standard_1947_11_30_27.pdf","description":"","thumbnail":"https://historicmt.org/files/square_thumbnails/7ce66b8dcdaac7dfb20f8e0b5c977d8e.jpg"}}}
