Its heavy stone porch columns, steep roof, and imposing height belie its modest size. Initially, the house had a lower profile. Soon after the Phillips moved in, the city drastically re-graded all the streets in the neighborhood, leaving the Phillips’ house about nine feet higher than it was originally. The Phillips and numerous neighbors sued the city asking for funds to build retaining walls and stairs. Despite (or perhaps because of) James’s prominent position as copper king William A. Clark’s auditor, he only received $250 in damages. In 1918, Louis and Metta Quigley purchased the home. Louis was assistant superintendent of the Timber Butte Mine, and Metta raised their children and helped lead Chapter G of Butte’s P.E.O. Sisterhood, a nonprofit organization helping women advance through education. In 1929, blowing embers from a fire next door at 1133 spread to the Quigleys' roof, causing $3,000 damage. Respected physician and surgeon Dr. Thomas Shanley lived here with wife Anne and two children beginning in 1931.","sponsor":null,"accessinfo":"private","lede":"","website":"","related_resources":["Read more about the Butte Historic District","See more photos of the Butte Historic District"],"factoids":[],"files":{"https://historicmt.org/files/fullsize/1c7d537d68e29fa9c24b783990962a1f.jpg":{"id":6337,"mime-type":"image/jpeg","title":"1145 Antimony","description":"View of facade | Google | 2021 | Google Streetview Image","thumbnail":"https://historicmt.org/files/square_thumbnails/1c7d537d68e29fa9c24b783990962a1f.jpg"},"https://historicmt.org/files/original/bc2eb4d15f2908d5cc0b715f831dad1d.pdf":{"id":6329,"mime-type":"application/pdf","title":"Suits filed for grading damages The_Butte_Daily_Post_1909_11_09_6.pdf","description":"","thumbnail":"https://historicmt.org/files/square_thumbnails/bc2eb4d15f2908d5cc0b715f831dad1d.jpg"},"https://historicmt.org/files/original/08ef3c69ef63307bb108a25a97edc349.pdf":{"id":6330,"mime-type":"application/pdf","title":"Suits filed over Antimony grade cut The_Butte_Miner_1909_11_10_8.pdf","description":"","thumbnail":"https://historicmt.org/files/square_thumbnails/08ef3c69ef63307bb108a25a97edc349.jpg"},"https://historicmt.org/files/original/a2c44a255ffa9b73bb7f7ce6cf4a78d4.pdf":{"id":6327,"mime-type":"application/pdf","title":"Property owners combine suit front page 1 article The_Butte_Daily_Post_1909_11_20_1.pdf","description":"","thumbnail":"https://historicmt.org/files/square_thumbnails/a2c44a255ffa9b73bb7f7ce6cf4a78d4.jpg"},"https://historicmt.org/files/original/1bdfe41997a2eac37f22348f50bc3555.pdf":{"id":6328,"mime-type":"application/pdf","title":"Property owners sue city for grading The_Butte_Daily_Post_1909_11_20_3.pdf","description":"","thumbnail":"https://historicmt.org/files/square_thumbnails/1bdfe41997a2eac37f22348f50bc3555.jpg"},"https://historicmt.org/files/original/59bba25e902b5ae630b035ba9d6d017a.pdf":{"id":6333,"mime-type":"application/pdf","title":"J.
