Guy created the subdivision in 1880. During the 1870s, John and his business partner Thomas B. Gray operated a strawberry farm on these lots that included a sprawling home, alley cottage, and two greenhouses. Circa 1919, Bozeman Hotel owner George Dier removed or radically remodeled the original home to build this classic Craftsman style bungalow. Brick infill in the walls and square nails found during a twenty-first-century remodel suggest that builders recycled some of the old home to construct this one. Swedish-born cook Andrew F. Anderson and wife Nellie purchased the residence in 1919. Andrew worked at the Commercial Hotel and, in 1922, traded this home (and some cash) to buy the hotel from J. Lew Gracey. Lew operated a print shop and later served as county public administrator, court bailiff, and justice of the peace. He and his sister Etta shared the house and raised their orphaned niece. Lew died in 1948, and Etta remained in residence until she died in 1956.","sponsor":null,"accessinfo":"private","lede":"","website":"","related_resources":["Read more about the Lindley Place Historic District."],"factoids":[],"files":{"https://historicmt.org/files/fullsize/c62121a91c69385f94c14bd14c273a13.jpg":{"id":6568,"mime-type":"image/jpeg","title":"Gracey Home","description":"View of facade | Montana Historical Society | July 2026 | Arizona Duff","alt":"alt=""","thumbnail":"https://historicmt.org/files/square_thumbnails/c62121a91c69385f94c14bd14c273a13.jpg"},"https://historicmt.org/files/fullsize/322575495261ee15381227ff4b798072.jpg":{"id":6567,"mime-type":"image/jpeg","title":"Gracey Home","description":"Front to side view of home | Montana Historical Society | July 2026 | Arizona Duff ","alt":"alt=""","thumbnail":"https://historicmt.org/files/square_thumbnails/322575495261ee15381227ff4b798072.jpg"},"https://historicmt.org/files/fullsize/bc6aa5951b79763454a5e0faf7cc20b1.jpg":{"id":6253,"mime-type":"image/png","title":"Gracey Home","description":"Front view of façade | Google Street View | May 2024","alt":"alt=""","thumbnail":"https://historicmt.org/files/square_thumbnails/bc6aa5951b79763454a5e0faf7cc20b1.jpg"},"https://historicmt.org/files/original/0d0f1916c4cb1b478139954d3665a4f7.pdf":{"id":6384,"mime-type":"application/pdf","title":"217 Lindley Place research files","description":"A collection of newspaper clippings, maps, and public records pertaining to 217 Lindley Place's history. | 2024 | Montana Historical Society","thumbnail":"https://historicmt.org/files/square_thumbnails/0d0f1916c4cb1b478139954d3665a4f7.jpg"},"https://historicmt.org/files/original/c7c7bb8054a62df49aa791b005ce16e9.pdf":{"id":6562,"mime-type":"application/pdf","title":"Lindley Place Historic District","description":"Nomination Documentation.
