While other businesses in the territory called themselves banks, most were actually express companies that exchanged gold for cash or offered storage space in their safes. Allen and Millard, in fact, had the power to write drafts on a New York bank. The building itself, beautifully maintained, is one of Virginia City’s oldest and best-preserved stone buildings. Although the original French doors and tall, narrow windows were replaced circa 1900, the front façade features the original ashlar stone, bracketed wooden cornice, and wooden window heads, allowing the building to retain its 1860s appearance. The bank operated as Hall and Bennett into the early 1900s and then became the Madison State Bank, which did business until 1930.","sponsor":null,"accessinfo":"Private","lede":"","website":"","related_resources":["Read about Virginia City National Historic Landmark District","See photos of Virginia City National Historic Landmark District"],"factoids":[],"files":{"https://historicmt.org/files/fullsize/e28d89f38985b37d1fd1f280b785d659.jpg":{"id":2436,"mime-type":"image/jpeg","title":"Hall and Bennett Bank, Virginia City","description":"View of five unidentified men standing on a boardwalk in front of a large stone building, one man is holding up a
\r\n bicycle. | PAc 956-097, Montana Legacy Photograph Collection, Montana Historical Society Research Center Photograph Archives, Helena, MT. | ca. 1895 | Unknown photographer","thumbnail":"https://historicmt.org/files/square_thumbnails/e28d89f38985b37d1fd1f280b785d659.jpg"},"https://historicmt.org/files/fullsize/05d143a2de8e6986b562b627fcd14681.jpg":{"id":50,"mime-type":"image/jpeg","title":"Allen and Millard Bank, streetview","description":"Bank built by Allen and Millard in Virginia City, Montana, later Hussey, Dahler and Co. | Catalog # 956-098, Montana Historical Society Research Center Photograph Archives, Helena, MT. | no date | Photographer Taylor","thumbnail":"https://historicmt.org/files/square_thumbnails/05d143a2de8e6986b562b627fcd14681.jpg"},"https://historicmt.org/files/fullsize/1808e0bf9aeedc57eccc5cbc8f8d082f.jpg":{"id":2435,"mime-type":"image/jpeg","title":"Allen & Millard Bank, Virginia City","description":"View looking southwest at building facade on Wallace St. | Courtesy of Montana Heritage Commission | Oct 2019 | Kate Steeley, Montana Heritage Commission","thumbnail":"https://historicmt.org/files/square_thumbnails/1808e0bf9aeedc57eccc5cbc8f8d082f.jpg"}}}
